Formerly the Ritz Carlton and Sir Stamford, the Intercontinental Double Bay in Sydney opened its doors just over one year ago.
After a multi-millionaire dollar renovation, the 140 room hotel has an intimate boutique feel with all the glamour, contemporary touches and luxury you would expect of a 5 star hotel.
Situated in one of Sydney's most illustrious suburbs, with high end shopping and eateries just a short stroll away – the Intercontinental Double Bay is the ideal location for your next meeting or conference.
FCM's Global Marketing Leader, Karen Cooke, recently attended the hotel for a two day offsite meeting and we caught up with her to get her take on this wonderful hotel.
Tell us about the property in general
Immediately upon entering the lobby you are taken into another world of opulence with ornate chandeliers, luxurious sofas, Italian marble floors, stunning floral displays and colourful artworks – its really quite breathtaking.
What were the rooms like?
The room was spacious and stylishly appointed, with designer artwork and homewares providing the perfect contrast to the predominantly brown, cream and grey tones. A tall arched window leading out onto a small verandah provided the opportunity to catch some fresh air and allow plenty of natural light into the room. A great feature was the full sized ottoman positioned at the end of the bed, always handy when travelling with a large suitcase!
What was the bathroom like?
The bathroom is the room’s best feature! Generously sized – the room features a separate deep bath and shower, white and charcoal grey marble throughout, his and her sinks and quality fittings and fixtures. Large fluffy white towels and robes and amenities by Agraria San Francisco in a refreshing lemon verbena scent complete the experience.
Was there a conference room that made it suitable for a corporate getaway?
There are six different sized conference/meeting rooms available with capacity ranging from 10 to 104 people. For those larger events there is a Grand Ballroom which holds up to 550 people – perfect for large corporate balls, conferences or parties. Rooms come equipped with all the latest technology, audio visual equipment and on-site catering.
What other facilities were available on site?
A stand out feature is the roof top pool and bar offering unsurpassed views of the city skyline. It’s the perfect place to unwind in a Miami style cabana by day or to attend a cocktail party under the stars by night.
Other 5 star standard facilities include a day spa, business centre, Executive Club Level and same day dry cleaning service.
Did you enjoy the food?
The in-house restaurant, the Stockroom, offers a plentiful and high-end breakfast buffet in a comfortable ambient setting. The all-day lounge bar had a constant trickle of guests enjoying the coffee right through until evening where cocktails and the gin are a speciality.
The conference catering was delicious with a selection of healthy superfood salads, mini homemade pies, and a spicy fish curry. I was also fortunate to attend a pre-dinner function in the Stockroom and sampled the gourmet canapés and champagne on offer.
Who would you recommend this property for?
As this hotel is 5 kilometres from the Sydney CBD it is well located for business travellers wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the city or who may have business to take care of in Sydney's Eastern suburbs. It’s also the perfect retreat for leisure travellers looking for a quieter more intimate style of hotel with all the luxury touches.
With Double Bay’s reinvigorated restaurant and boutique shopping precinct right on the doorstep and the beach just minutes away, it’s the perfect venue for a business or leisure trip (or a bit of both!)
What’s your overall rating out of 5.
I’d give the Intercontinental Double Bay a score of 4.5. It’s a hidden gem in a crowded Sydney hotel scene.
