A new survey reveals that in Sydney the difference between booking accommodation on the popular website and comparable hotel rooms could be the matter of just a few dollars.
There are even claims that in some parts of Australia staying in a private home could actually cost you more.
But Airbnb has said the people listing their homes on the website set the prices they see as fair.
For travellers with tight funds, Airbnb has increasingly become the go-to accommodation website listing everything from spare rooms to whole houses or even quirkier options like canal boats and tree houses.
Research from global bus ticket booking website Busbud has shown the amount you can save by opting for Airbnb varies wildly from city to city. Pick the wrong city and you could be paying over the odds for a spare room while cheaper hotel rooms go wanting.
Busbud took 222,000 Airbnb listings — including shared rooms and whole homes — in 22 cities worldwide and compared them to hotel rooms in the same places on a major booking website.
Opting for Airbnb over hotels in cities such as London or Paris could save hundreds of dollars. In Berlin, Paris and Vienna hotels rooms are almost double the cost of the average Airbnb stay while in New York, bedding down in a hotel will cost on average 49 per cent more than bedding down in someone’s spare room.
Yet in Sydney, the only Australian city examined, the difference between hotels and Airbnb was far closer at only around 30 per cent. The average hotel room was $247 a night with Airbnb costing $197.
